Seiko 7T62A - Technical Guide

The Seiko 7T62A is a well-regarded quartz analog chronograph movement known for its alarm function, dual time capability, and stopwatch feature. This caliber was designed to offer reliability, functionality, and ease of use, making it a popular choice for Seiko sport and dress watches during the 2000s and early 2010s.

Movement Overview

  • Caliber: 7T62A

  • Type: Quartz (analog)

  • Battery: SR927W (1.55V silver oxide cell)

  • Accuracy: ±15 seconds per month

  • Battery Life: Approximately 3 years

The movement runs via a stepper motor system powered by a long-life silver oxide battery. While it lacks the ultra-high precision of modern smartwatches, the 7T62A maintains excellent reliability for day-to-day use.

Functions and Layout

The Seiko 7T62A features a multi-hand analog display. Standard watch layouts with this movement include:

  • Main hour and minute hands (central)

  • Small continuous seconds hand at 6 o'clock

  • 1/5-second chronograph hand (center)

  • Chronograph minute counter at 12 o'clock

  • Alarm/dual time subdial at 9 o'clock

This arrangement allows the user to track elapsed time, monitor a second time zone, and set a daily alarm.

Using the Chronograph

  • Start/Stop: Press the top right pusher (Button A)

  • Reset: Press the bottom right pusher (Button B)

The center chronograph hand counts seconds, while the subdial at 12 o'clock tracks up to 60 minutes. Timing longer than one hour is not supported.

Alarm and Dual Time

The subdial at 9 o'clock serves two purposes:

  1. Alarm Function:

    • Pull the crown to the second click and rotate to set the alarm hand.

    • Push the crown back in.

    • Use Button B to activate/deactivate the alarm.

    • The alarm will sound once per 12-hour cycle.

  2. Second Time Zone:

    • Instead of setting the alarm, you can use the subdial to display another time zone.

    • This is a convenient feature for travelers.

Note: The alarm sound is produced by a small internal hammer mechanism striking a piezoelectric element.

Battery Replacement and EOL

When the battery is low, the seconds hand begins to jump in 2-second intervals. This is Seiko’s end-of-life (EOL) signal.

To replace the battery:

  1. Open the case back.

  2. Remove the old SR927W cell using non-metal tweezers.

  3. Install the new battery.

  4. If necessary, short the AC contact to the battery (+) with metallic tweezers to reset the movement.

Final Thoughts

The Seiko 7T62A is a durable and practical movement that offers essential timekeeping with added features like an alarm and stopwatch. Its layout is user-friendly, and it has stood the test of time in many popular Seiko models. Whether used in sports or casual watches, the 7T62A delivers value and functionality in a classic analog format.
