Seiko M726A – Technical Guide
The Seiko M726A is a specialized digital quartz movement designed in the 1990s, primarily featured in Seiko's Scubamaster series—a lineup of professional-grade diver’s digital watches. This module represents a blend of Seiko’s dedication to diving technology, instrument-style timekeeping, and robust digital engineering. Known for its depth meter, dive log memory, and water/pressure sensors, the M726A was engineered specifically for divers who required both reliable underwater performance and useful post-dive data.
The Seiko M726A is a digital-only quartz movement with dive computer features built in. It is not a full decompression dive computer, but rather a dive timer with depth tracking, suitable for both recreational and professional divers.
Main Features:
Digital time display (12/24-hour format)
Depth meter (records depth during dive)
Dive timer (tracks time and maximum depth)
Surface interval timer
Dive log memory (stores data from previous dives)
Daily alarm
Calendar (day, date, month)
Stopwatch (1/100 second)
Countdown timer
Electro-luminescent backlight
Battery Type: CR2025 lithium coin cell
Battery Life: Approx. 2–3 years, depending on dive mode frequency and backlight usage
The M726A’s standout feature is its depth sensor, typically located on the side or back of the case. The watch automatically enters dive mode when submerged to a certain depth—usually around 1.5 meters.
Dive Mode Capabilities:
Tracks current depth in meters (up to 100m in most models)
Displays maximum depth reached
Measures elapsed dive time
Stores last dive data (depth and time) in memory
Surface Interval Timer activates once the watch detects it has returned to the surface
The data stored helps divers keep track of their dives without needing to write everything down manually.
Watches using the M726A movement, such as the Seiko Scubamaster M726-5A00, are designed for durability and legibility.
Case and Display Features:
Case diameter: 43–45 mm
Case material: Stainless steel or titanium
Crystal: Mineral glass (hardened)
Water resistance: 200 meters (20 bar) ISO-certified for diving
Buttons: Typically 4, with oversized pushers for underwater operation
Display: Large segmented LCD with bold numerals and dive mode indicators
The case back is often marked “Scubamaster”, and the strap is made of silicone or rubber with decompression marks on the inner band.
The M726A uses a four-button layout, commonly arranged as:
Mode (bottom-left): Cycles through Time, Alarm, Stopwatch, Countdown Timer, Dive Log
Adjust/Set (bottom-right): Used to enter setting mode or toggle display fields
Start/Stop (top-right): Activates stopwatch/timer or adjusts values
Backlight (top-left): Activates electro-luminescent screen lighting
In Dive Mode, the buttons may be locked or limited to prevent accidental input underwater.
Press Mode to enter Time mode.
Hold Adjust until the hour digits blink.
Use Start/Stop to adjust values.
Use Mode to toggle between hour, minute, date, month, and day.
Press Adjust again to save and exit.
Given its tool-watch nature, the M726A and its supporting hardware require careful and regular maintenance, especially if the watch is actively used for diving.
Service Notes:
Battery replacement must be done by a technician familiar with dive-rated digital watches
Always perform a water-resistance test after battery changes
Clean depth sensor vents to prevent salt or debris buildup
Replace gaskets regularly for consistent 200m water resistance
Backlight can dim over time but is usually reliable for the life of the watch
Avoid exposing the sensor to harsh chemicals or pressurized air, which can impair depth readings.
This is the most well-known watch using the M726A movement. It features:
Large digital display
Depth and dive tracking
ISO-rated 200m water resistance
Prominent branding on the case and strap
Professional diver aesthetics
The Seiko M726A is a specialized, purpose-driven digital movement made for serious divers. While it doesn’t offer the decompression modeling of full dive computers, it delivers highly reliable depth and dive time tracking, packaged in a rugged, wrist-wearable format. Today, it’s appreciated not only by vintage dive watch collectors but also by those who value Seiko’s legacy in professional-grade tool watches. The M726A remains a testament to Seiko’s commitment to innovation, even in the digital age.
