The Seiko S149A is a hybrid analog-digital quartz movement designed for advanced multifunction watches that prioritize versatility and rugged performance. Found in a range of Seiko’s field, sport, and tactical models, the S149A builds upon the success of previous analog-digital calibers by integrating enhanced digital clarity, improved synchronization between analog and digital systems, and optimized battery life—all within a compact, serviceable module.
As a member of Seiko’s “ana-digi” family, the S149A movement features both analog hands for immediate, glanceable time-reading and a digital LCD display that delivers detailed features like alarms, timers, a chronograph, dual time zones, and a calendar. Its layout is designed for quick access to essential functions in watches used by professionals, military personnel, athletes, and global travelers.
Compared to earlier movements like the S140A or S143A, the S149A features updated internals for greater accuracy, smoother digital transitions, and a brighter backlight for improved low-light readability.
Analog Display: Central hour and minute hands (most models omit analog seconds hand).
Digital LCD: High-contrast screen for additional functions.
Chronograph: Measures up to 100 minutes in 1/100-second intervals.
Countdown Timer: Configurable timer with visual and/or audio alert.
Daily Alarm: Digital alarm with tone.
Dual Time Zone: Display and set a second time zone digitally.
Full Auto Calendar: Pre-programmed to 2049 or later.
12/24-Hour Display Option: Switchable digital time format.
Backlight: Electro-luminescent (EL) or LED depending on case design.
Battery End-of-Life Indicator: Flashing digital elements when battery voltage drops.
These features make the S149A well-suited for field use, sports timing, and international travel—combining legibility with functionality.

Most S149A-equipped watches use 3 or 4 pushers alongside a crown to control both analog and digital operations.
Crown:
Pull once: Sets analog time (independent of digital time).
Button A (Top Left):
Mode selector – switches between Time, Chronograph, Timer, Alarm, and Dual Time.
Button B (Top Right):
Start/Stop functions or toggle values.
Button C (Bottom Left):
Reset or backlight activation.
Button D (Bottom Right):
Toggle display format or enter setting mode.
Note: Function labeling may vary by model, but layout remains consistent across most watches using the S149A.
Use SR927W battery only.
After installation, perform the AC reset: bridge the AC contact point with the battery edge using metal tweezers or a probe.
Test all digital functions, backlight, and alarm before resealing the case.
Adjust analog time using the crown.
Analog and digital displays are set separately, which can be useful for travel or daylight saving changes.
After reset, confirm all segments display properly.
If faded or missing segments appear, module replacement is usually required (LCD is not individually serviceable).
Always replace the caseback and pusher gaskets after opening the case.
Apply silicone grease and pressure-test if the case is rated for water resistance.
Blank Display After Battery Change: Caused by missing the AC reset—must be performed for the digital module to function.
Backlight Not Working: Could be due to battery drain or EL panel degradation.
Buttons Not Responding: May result from dirty or oxidized contacts—disassemble and clean pushers and springs.
Analog and Digital Time Mismatch: This is normal—each must be set independently.
Rapid Battery Drain: Caused by overuse of alarm or light functions, or using an incorrect battery type.
The Seiko S149A is a powerful and refined analog-digital quartz movement built for multifunction performance in demanding conditions. With a balance of traditional analog timekeeping and robust digital features, it offers a user-friendly interface ideal for those who require a tool watch with real-world functionality. Whether used for travel, timing, or tactical tasks, the S149A remains dependable, accurate, and straightforward to service—underscoring Seiko’s ongoing innovation in hybrid quartz technology.
